I didn't see this in the wonderful "From the Back Pages" feature for today so I thought I should make a quick story about the news that Tom Cleverley looks to be returning to United in January to challenge for a place in the squad. TC has been hurt and not featured much for Wigan so far but obviously he is still developing and improving if Fergie believes he can come into the squad and challenge for a place before the end of the season. Cleverley's versatility in midfield certainly helps his case to get into the squad but I wonder what this potential recall says about the future of a guy like Obertan. Presumably Valencia's injury has opened a spot on the wing and with Park not in the best form to start the season you would have thought Obertan would have got some time out wide. But he has not really featured this season other than a run out in the league cup. Fergie has said that Cleverley could be the next big thing to come through our youth set up. I hope he is right. I have always felt that supporters prefer to see a player like Cleverley or Welbeck make their way into the squad and become a top player. Local kids who understand what it is like to pour your heart and soul into this club. Plus we need to replace guys like Scholes and Giggs eventually and I think having a home grown player or two to replace those guys is going to be vital.
So Cleverley could return and force his way into the first team picture as soon as January.
What are your thoughts? Why do you think Fergie is looking to maybe make this U-turn on Cleverley now after sending him out on loan for the whole season just a few months ago? Do you like having young English players to root for in the United squad or do you not really care?
