POST-MATCH QUOTES

Sir Alex Ferguson | MUFC manager (courtesy of MUTV)

(On his side's performance at Craven Cottage...) "The games against Fulham over the last three years tell you how difficult it is to come here; we’d only won one point from nine. We were very patient with the ball in the early part of the match. We worked our way through the Fulham midfield and it was a great cutback for Danny to score his goal. He took it well. Good starts are really important in games like this and it gave us control until half-time. We had to make some changes before the match and then Phil Jones picked up his injury. So it says a lot for the players. They stood up to a really difficult game."

(On the 2nd half and the goals from Rooney and Berbatov...) "They were two great goals to finish. We were under the cosh for a lot of time in the second half and we stood up to that. Fulham are very good passers of the ball in tight areas and Andy Johnson missed a hat-trick. But in the context of having to make the changes, we have to be pleased that we survived that and the two deciding goals – the one from Wayne from 25 yards was an absolutely great goal, followed by a lovely touch from Berbatov and a great pass from Antonio – made it a really good night for us."

(On Phil Jones' injury during the match...) "We’ll send him for an X-ray tomorrow. He had an elbow to his jaw. It was an elbow by Dempsey but I don’t think it was deliberate."

(On Ashley Young's injury during the match...) "Fulham were very aggressive and Ashley Young has paid the price for that. He’ll be out for two or three weeks."

(On Rio Ferdinand's availability...) "Rio got a knock on the foot on Sunday against Queens Park Rangers. I think he’ll be available for Blackburn [on New Year’s Eve] but not the Wigan game."

(On United's current league form....) "It’s been a good few weeks. You saw what we’re capable of [at Fulham] and that’s the standard we set ourselves. It was a similar story at Queens Park Rangers [last Sunday]. There, we just didn’t finish the chances off. Today we managed to score the goals. To come to a place like Craven Cottage and have that sort of movement and interplay was first-class."

(On carrying that form over to the upcoming ties at Old Trafford...) "We have to carry on the form we’re in at the moment. If we do that we’re a very hard team to beat, especially at home. At Old Trafford we always expect to go out and win but we still need to go out with the same hunger and appetite as we had [at Fulham]."

(On United's attack...) "For myself and Michael Carrick in midfield, the movement in front of us was brilliant. Obviously the defending was good as well. But when you have so many options on the ball – people running in behind, people dropping in the hole – we’re a very difficult team to play. The performance was really pleasing."

(On his goal and being the only player to have scored in every season of the Premier League's existence...) "I was starting to get worried [I wouldn’t score this season. Last season I scored in one of the first games so I didn’t have to worry about it after that. I’ll definitely be claiming this one. A centre-forward would definitely claim it."
