The mass exodus for apparent Manchester United excess to Wearside continues as John O'Shea will follow Wes Brown in moving away from Old Trafford. The 30-year-old versatile defender was due to have a medical today at Sunderland and reports indicate that a four-year deal has been completed. O'Shea has been with United since 1999 and during his time with the club, his versatility and competent ability to play a number of roles has helped his side win the Premier League five times, the League Cup thrice, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League. While Brown's form and role has diminished in recent season, O'Shea has proved himself to still be a valuable squad player as he made numerous starts at right-back during the recent successful run-in. Unless O'Shea asked for a move himself in order to seek regular first-team football, it could be argued that the Ireland international should not be sold. United are well stocked in defense, but with 60 matches or so in the upcoming campaign and with the proneness to injury that youngsters Rafael and Fabio have shown, O'Shea provided valuable cover.

Here is what Sunderland manager Steve Bruce had to say about O'Shea:

"He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us. I'm delighted with the players we've been able to secure ahead of the new season."
