Manchester United's top 20 youth prospects: #7-8

Alex Livesey

Continuing our rundown of the club's top young talents, we look at two young strikers who have a chance of breaking into the Manchester United first team.

In order to help run the rule over United's younger players, we enlisted the help of Doron Salomon, a regular youth-game watcher, to pass on some comments about the next generation of United talent. You can also find more of Doron's work on Stretford End.

7. Angelo Henriquez

Although we saw little of Henriquez last season, we did get to see a few glimpses of him for Chile at the Under-20 World Cup, where he was sadly often shunted out on the wing, where he was less effective. Nonetheless, Henriquez has a deserved reputation as an all-round forward, with few real weaknesses in his position. Despite not being the tallest, he has a good leap on him, similar to Javier Hernandez, and can score plenty of types of goals.

Another loan this year, perhaps to Zaragoza, is probably in the works, and it should help us gain a better understanding of what sort of player he is. Our riches in the forward positions mean that another loan or two will probably be in the works before he gets a chance at Old Trafford, barring a surprisingly rapid development or the unforeseen loss of one of our current strikers. He may be in a position we're well-stocked in, but make no mistake that United have a hugely talented young player on their books here.

Doron: Fans' perception of him may be somewhat blurred by his loan at Wigan last season. Granted, that he was seldom used from the bench says something but Wigan's staff had nothing but positive things to say about him - notably his attitude in training and his desire to learn in order to become a better player. He himself says he's much the better for the experience at Wigan.

Although small, he's a light-footed, intelligent forward. Angelo has plenty of attributes that make him stand out: positioning, movement, intelligence and ultimately his finishing. He can play through the middle and be used from wide areas whilst still being a goal threat. For Chile across the various ages he has 26 caps and 27 goals - this is a talented player but he may have to be patient for his chance at United. A loan, potentially to Zaragoza could be good use of next season.

8. Will Keane

Will Keane, the brother of Michael, is a hugely talented forward who was pencilled in for a spot in the first-team last season before a terrible injury cruelly cut his chances short. Despite that, attitude, support and United's good recent record at helping youngsters such as Adnan Januzaj over bad injuries mean that shouldn't be reason to be too negative about his chances of progressing.

A supremely gifted technical forward, who has drawn comparisons with Teddy Sheringham due to his excellent link-up play, although United have plenty of talented forwards there is reason to believe that Keane could break into the first team before too long..

We all know about Will's prowess because his goals for United's U18s and Reserves have been well-documented over the last few years. He's a striker with similarities to Sheringham in terms of control, timing, finishing, incisiveness and all-round ability to contribute. On the verge of making the first team, he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury whilst on international duty with England a year ago and hasn't played since.

The club have been understandably cautious with regards to any return to action and rather than rush him back for the end of last season, he was put on specific strengthening schedules including going to the Dallas Cup as a non-playing member of staff earlier in the year. Now, nearly back in full training properly, the club hope he'll feature in an U21 pre-season friendly before being eased back into competitive football. In the time out he's been working hard to bulk up and strengthen his body where possible. It's hard to know what he can achieve going forwards given the time out but like his twin brother, Michael, he has a fabulous attitude and a great support team behind him so don't be amazed if he's back to his normal self before long.
