Manchester United in shock late move for Cabaye, says Newcastle source

Paul Thomas

Manchester United are in talks for a shock late bid for Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye, according to a source linked to the North-East club.

Manchester United will make a late bid to sign Newcastle United's Yohan Cabaye, according to a report.

Here's where it gets weird - the source is none other than Sports Direct News. Ordinarily this wouldn't be worth posting, as the site seems to post random nonsense with regards to transfers all the time, but SportsDirect are of course owned by Mike Ashley, who also owns Newcastle.

Why Ashley would want to leak news that one of his own players was set to move is anyone's guess, particularly as he's been determined to keep hold of him. If the move was in addition to Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini, it'd be excellent news, giving us real depth in midfield. If it's instead of Fellaini, it's intriguing. If it's instead of Herrera then it's probably really bad news.

This is a bizarre one and could turn out to be total nonsense, but the source makes it even stranger. It could be a case of Newcastle wanting to look like they're rejecting bids and keeping hold of players on an otherwise disappointing day. It could be real. Watch this space.
