I'm going to use a really simple method and a couple of illustrative graphs to show how Man United have fared so far this season in terms of title winning form and fourth placed form.
To do this I am going to use Man United's points per game (ppg), the ppg needed to win the title and the ppg needed for fourth place.
Title 85 points
Top Four 68 points
Relegation 40 points
Man United's Points Per Game Chart (22 games)
So, that doesn't look too bad does it? Using the ten year historical average points needed for for fourth place we can see that United aren't too far off the pace, 2 points off the pace, in fact.
Assuming that 68 points will be good enough for fourth place - it may well not be good enough - then Man United need 31 points in their remaining 16 fixtures. A simple projection to reach that total may look something like 9 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses.
Is that points total attainable? I'd say so. Will it be enough? Maybe not.
Incidentally, Man United would need 48 points from their remaining 16 fixtures to come close to winning the league. To reach a total of 48 points Man United need to win everyone of their remaining 16 games.
The title has gone, it is now time to readjust this seasons targets and focus minds on more realistic aims. The top 4 is still attainable, but form will need to be improved if the target of a top four finish is to be attained.
