It's time to add another name to the ever-swelling list of midfielders that have been linked to Manchester United. And it may also be time to cross that name off, depending on who you're reading.
Enzo Perez is a 28-year-old Argentinian midfielder who had an outstanding last season with Benfica, as the Lisbon side won the Portuguese title and reached the final of the Europa League. Perez was hailed by Jorge Jesus as the "brains" of his side, though he missed the final due to suspension as they lost on penalties. Anyway, according to the player himself, talking to Argentine TV and quoted in the Irish Independent, that season has been enough to attract United's attention:
There are negotiations between other clubs and Benfica about me. I know that Valencia and Manchester United are interested. There are serious possibilities to leave after the World Cup.
Other sources disagree. Sky Sports quote the lad talking to O Jogo, first hedging ...
I know about their interest, I have heard about these possibilities and my agent told me about them too. There is the possibility of playing for Valencia, who are a great club, but right now I want to be fully focused on the Argentina national team and on the World Cup.
... and then pledging.
I am very happy at Benfica, I signed the contract renewal before travelling to join the Argentina squad, which shows that I want to keep wearing this shirt. I am feeling very well at Benfica and I know the club will try to do the best for me, I'll respect what they decide.
So take your pinches of salt and distribute according to preference. TBB freely admit that we don't know much about Perez, but Jorge Jesus' team were great fun to watch last season. And to be honest, we're still reeling from the shock of being linked to a Benfica player that isn't Ezequiel Garay.
