Mildly amusing news from the Guardian's Jamie Jackson. Apparently Eliaquim Mangala, 23-year-old Porto centre-half, France international and Manchester City's primary summer transfer target, would prefer to move to United.
Apparently he believes United to be "of a greater status to City," which seems obvious but is still always nice to hear. He also prefers Chelsea for much the same reason, apparently, but we can gloss over that. And Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid as well. Nice to see a young man keeping his options open ...
Every player wants to play in the biggest clubs. I am an ambitious player and the team that can help me win titles is the one that interests me.
You're supposed to say project, son. You're very excited about the project. Talking about titles is terribly gauche.
Not that United are actually going to buy him, of course. The reported price is £35m, which is a fair chunk of change, and apparently Van Gaal has "reservations over his temperament," is unsure whether he's fully matured, and in any case would prefer Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels.
