POST-MATCH QUOTES
Sir Alex Ferguson | MUFC manager (courtesy of ManUtd.com)
(On his side's performance and the result...) "Of course we're disappointed. There's no other way you can feel. We had so much possession of the ball and so many really good opportunities in the last third of the field. Some of our play up to that point was very good but you have to say we let ourselves down with the finishing part."
(On United heading to the Europa League...) "The Europa League is a competition I've never been in at United and it does mean one thing - Sundays right through. Thursdays and Sundays. That's got to be dealt with and it's not the best but that's our penalty for not qualifying tonight."
(On Vidic's injury...) "We don't know obviously at this moment in time. We think it's certainly the medial ligament and hopefully that's the worst it is."
Rio Ferdinand | MUFC defender (courtesy of MUTV)
(On United heading to the Europa League...) "We're in the Europa League now and I've always said that whatever competition we’re in we don't enter it to come second or to get knocked out in the early stages. We're always in it to win it and this is no different."
(On the disappointment of failing to qualifying for UCL knockout stages...) "Nights at Old Trafford, under the lights, the Champions League music... that's what you live for. We've gone out early this year and we're disappointed. But we can't blame anyone else but ourselves. The lads are all devastated to have gone out at this stage of the tournament. But that’s the reality. That’s what’s happened. We have to look back at the games at Old Trafford. We've not done enough to win those games. The manager's always said that if you don't win your home games you don't deserve to go through. That's the case this season."
(On United's need to rebound from this defeat...) "That's what this club does. We'll learn from this, dust ourselves down and move to the next game. We won't dwell on this, although we're massively disappointed at the moment. But we've got massive games coming up and we need to make sure we're in the right frame of mind to win those games."
Patrice Evra | MUFC defender
(On being eliminated from the UCL...) "It's a big disappointment. Since I played with Monaco, I've never been out in the first round. It's catastrophic and we feel very sad but we deserved to go out. It's not about tonight but throughout the competition - we threw away qualification. We created a lot of chances tonight and they get only two chances but they win - and deserved to win. From the beginning, we never played well in the Champions League."
(On United's need to rebound...) "If you play for Manchester United, you have to be strong. I think the gaffer knows the players will get back because they've got a strong mentality. For six years, as I said, I've never been out in the first round so it's a new experience for us. We have got to get back and get focused on the Premier League as that's the target - to win the Premier League. It will be more difficult for us [with the Europa League commitments] but we deserved it with the way we played. We deserve to play on Thursday and Sunday. But we are Manchester United. Today is a really bad day for everyone - the fans, staff and players. We must make sure we don't throw the season away. We still have things to win and must make sure we play with heart. The fans deserve something better than us throwing away the Champions League."
