HIGHLIGHTS: West Brom 1 - 2 Manchester United

Manchester United open the season with 3 points after a West Brom own goal put United ahead in the 81st minute.  Goals from Wayne Rooney in the 13th minute and Shane Long in the 37 saw the game level through halftime.  Ashley Young's nifty move on the left side of the box saw him through towards goal where it deflected off of Steven Reid for the winner.

The bigger talking point, however, may be the injuries to captain Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, arguably the best pairing in central defense in Europe.  Vidic appeared injured only 20 minutes into the match, but fought through it until halftime and it appears that he could be out for a couple of weeks.  Ferdinand, meanwhile, pulled a hamstring that will see him miss 6 weeks.  It was also announced that Rafael had separated his shoulder Friday and will be out for 10 weeks.  United are to face Tottenham and Arsenal, both at Old Trafford over the next fortnight and how they cope with those two matches will be very telling as to how the youth of the back four can hold up throughout the next couple months.
