Manchester United transfer rumors: Is Darron Gibson on his way to Everton?

According to a report by Sky Sports, Manchester United midfielder Darron Gibson may be sold to Everton FC during the current transfer window. United are apparently in negotiations with the Merseyside club over his potential transfer and rumors are floating around that the fee would be in the region of £2 million. Gibson has fallen far down in the pecking order in United's central-midfield and he has only featured twice this season. Over the summer, it appeared that the Ireland international was on his way to Wearside to join Sunderland AFC. However, talks broke down and it was speculated that manager Sir Alex Ferguson became upset with Steve Bruce -- the then Black Cats manager and former United captain under Fergie -- over the matter. Gibson made his only league appearance on Boxing Day during United's 5-0 defeat of Wigan Athletic. However, the midfielder reportedly enjoyed an evening out after the match with Wayne Rooney and the then-injured Jonny Evans -- the result of which was Rooney being dropped for United's following match versus Blackburn Rovers. Gibson has not featured since despite the plethora of injuries at the club during this time.

Gibson is a product of United's youth system and he previously spent time on loan with Royal Antwerp and Wolverhampton Wanderers. However, midfielder never established himself as a vital member of United's first-team and in recent times, it seemed to be only a matter of time before he would move on to another club. After United failed to sell him during the past summer, Gibson mostly featured with the Reserves until his two recent appearances with the first-team. His departure would likely be mutually beneficial and I wish him nothing but the best if he is to move on.
