Sir Alex Ferguson has made it clear that he expects his captain Nemanja Vidic to start the season. Nemanja Vidic was injured against FC Basle before Christmas last season in that fateful game where United were knocked out of the Champions League.

Vidic will start the season. I am sure of that. He's doing good amounts of training but not in the competitive sense in the way the lads out here have done.

"It was pointless bringing him with us. He's back at Carrington with the facilities and the physios so he can get to the next level. By the time we come back, we hope he'll be at the competitive stage of his comeback.

Sir Alex also suggested that Chris Smalling will be fit for the new season. The english defender would have travelled with his country to the Euro's, yet a ruptured groin muscle messed up his opportunity.

There is worse news for Jonny Evans. Having enjoyed the best season of his career, he will likely miss the very start of the season as he himself recovers from surgery.

Each of their recoveries, mean that only one senior defender made the trip to Durban on the pre season tour. The first game of which is tomorrow, (There will be a live thread) against Amazulu FC.
