After an early goal in the opening minutes by Fulham's Damien Duff, it was all Manchester United in 1st half. It was fluid and attacking football and wonderful thoughts of butterflies, bubbles, and unicorns were dancing through my brain. Robin van Persie equalised in the 10th minute from a tremendous half-volley on his first attempt as a Manchester United player. United's other marquee signing -- Shinji Kagawa -- also scored his first Old Trafford goal when he tapped in a rebounded shot from a corner in the 35th minute. Rafael added a third 1st half goal when he headed home at the far-post from a Ashley Young cross. It was quite jovial for United at this point in time. Then the second half began.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side didn't nearly play with the same sharpness and perhaps intent in the 2nd half. In the 64th minute, a lofted cross was sent in for Mladen Petric and neither David de Gea nor David de Gea could adequately deal with the threat. The result was an improbable scorpion kick own-goal from Vida. Yes, really. From here, it was quite nervy and things didn't improve when Wayne Rooney was stretchered off in stoppage time due to a nasty gash on his leg. Fortunately, United held on for a 3-2 victory and three points.
