News broke today that Danish keeper Anders Lindegaard has signed a new contract that will tie him to the club untill the end of the 2015/16 season. A good move for all parties. Manchester United have kept a very good keeper that I for one will have confidence in if number 1 David De Gea goes down with injury.
Here are quotes from Lindegaard and Sir Alex Ferguson
"I'm glad and proud that the manager has shown the confidence he has in me by giving me a new deal. There is nowhere in the world I would rather be than right here. The competition for places is tough, as it should be in a club like this. It only makes us better as individuals and, more importantly, stronger as a team. It's what I have dreamt of all my life and nothing makes me more proud than wearing the Manchester United badge."
Anders Lindegaard
"Anders is still relatively young for a goalkeeper but he has come on leaps and bounds since joining us last year. There is healthy competition in the goalkeeping department, which is always good for the team, albeit a headache for me! I am delighted he has signed a new contract and also delighted to see that he has clearly returned from the summer break in good shape after the disappointment of suffering an injury last season."
Sir Alex Ferguson
Manchester United may possibly have the strongest pair of keepers in the league right now. Obviously, there are better keepers than either (I would take Joe Hart over either of ours in an instant), but if you look at the number one and two of each team, and then look at our two, I think they match up well. Here are the Leagues top six teams best two keepers (And Liverpool)
City - Joe Hart and Costel Pantilimon
Chelsea -Peter Cech and Ross Turnball
Arsenal - Wojciech Szczęsny and Łukasz Fabiański
Liverpool - Pepe Riena and Brad Jones
Spurs - Brad Friedel and Heurelho Gomes
Newcastle - Tim Krul and Steve Harper
It doesn't matter which of our keepers is number one. Whichever is unlucky enough to be sat on the bench is in my eyes the strongest second keeper in the Premier League and would walk into most Premier League outfits. I think Hart and Krul are probably the best two keepers in the league with Vorm of Swansea also needing credit after an outstanding season last year.
Anyway I would be very surprised if Anders Lindegaard started as number 1. But David De Gea better bring his A game each and every game because he has a hungry, determined and talented deputy waiting in the wings if he slips up
