Manchester United draw Newcastle United for League Cup

It was the UEFA Champions League draw that received the bulk of the attention today but there was another competition that Manchester United had a draw for as well -- the newly named Capital One Cup (AKA League Cup). Sometime on the week of September 24, the Red Devils will host Newcastle United at Old Trafford. With this tie sandwiched in between Premier League matches with Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur, and also because the League Cup is the fourth most important competition that United are involved in this season, it is very unlikely that manager Sir Alex Ferguson will field a first-choice side.

This has historically been a competition that he's used to blood in young players into the first-team. It is very possible that youngsters like Sam Johnstone, Scott Wootton, Michael Keane, Larnell Cole, Davide Petrucci, Ryan Tunnicliffe, and Jesse Lingard could get a game. In addition, this might offer an opportunity for the newly acquired Nick Powell or Alexander Buttner to get some minutes. Furthermore, this could mean playing time for a fringe player like Federico Macheda or for the recovering Darren Fletcher.
