Silly season (it continues longer in Russia). As we commented earlier, it seemed unlikely that a Nani transfer to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg was going to happen in the current transfer window. According to an updated ESPN FC report, the wage demands of the Portuguese winger have apparently made the deal even more unlikely. Good.
It's very possible that these reported happenings are certainly true -- especially with United possibly holding firm against supposed wage demands from a player who is not always a clear first-choice player -- but it was always unlikely the talented winger was going to move now. When considering Manchester United's dependency from their wingers in creating chances in attack, this is a move that wouldn't make sense unless a replacement was lined up. Perhaps this will be re-explored in January or next summer -- but Sir Alex Ferguson will presumably have someone ready to come aboard to replenish his squad in that case. I hope.
As United fans, hope that Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, and Nani all find form in these next four months. That way, no matter what happens, we have optimal first-choice options with a form player that we could potentially sell if he's looking for a move away from the club. In the meantime, let's get behind Nani. He's inconsistent, but he's also brilliant -- and he's contributed hugely to a haul of trophies while he's been here.
