Post Match Reaction: Manchester United 2 - 0 Everton

After Southampton downed Manchester City last night at St Mary's, Manchester United could take complete control of the league with three points over Everton at Old Trafford this morning.

They made no mistake.

With Real Madrid looming, Sir Alex Ferguson resisted the temptation to rest all of his big guns, although Rio Ferdinand and Micheal Carrick were afforded a rest. Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney both started, as did Phil Jones who looked perfectly healthy after his misdiagnosis from Dr Pierce in mid week. And indeed the young utility man played a key role in shadowing Marouane Fellaini and his every move in the first half.

United took the lead early in the first half. And it fell to the ageless wonderman. RVP played in Ryan Giggs. He shifted the ball onto his right foot and clinically slid it home off the post. Easy as you like. That goal means he has scored in every one of the past 21 seasons. Will that ever be matched in the modern game?

Having largely dominated the game up to that point, Everton then had a spell of pressure and forced some wonderful last ditch defending from Nemanja Vidic, who threw himself in front of a couple of shots. David de Gea was also sent diving to his left to divert a shot from Leon Osman from 25 yards.

Soon after it was two. Up to that point Robin Van Persie was not enjoying his best day. Having already missed an open goal on his weaker foot, he again was sent through. He dribbled round Tim Howard in the Everton goal and again found himself in a similar spot. He sent it goal wards and it looked for a minute as if Jonny Heitinga would clear, but the Dutchman could only divert it into the net. Great play by Rafael who wandered into the middle and set RVP through. He enjoyed a really good day today, making key contributions in both defense and going forward

The second half was reasonably quiet. United played at a tempo that suited them. Everton struggled to create anything of note. The highlights of the second half was a goalmouth scramble where Jonny Evans really should have scored, and a volley that Paul Scholes would have been proud of from Tom Cleverley which was kept out somehow by Tim Howard.

It was a big three points for United today. I personally cannot see us relinquishing this title now. Lightening very rarely strikes twice and the squad will have learnt lessons from the past season. And City are a different side as well. Do not have the same swagger of last year.

But for now, attention has shifted onto the massive Champions League tie in midweek. Jose Mourinho was in the house today checking us out, after his side beat Sevilla 4-1. Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat trick and is in top form going into the match. It will be some night. Make sure you stick with us for the build up to the big match!
