Manchester United Team News: Phil Jones a concern for Real Madrid

Phil Jones' fitness concerns are a worry to Manchester United's ambitions.

Sir Alex Ferguson just held his weekly press conference and there was one player we all had on our minds on -- Phil Jones. Here's the injury update the gaffer provided about the 20-year-old:

"Phil Jones is the one we're concerned about in terms of the Real Madrid game. We're working hard on it and I'd say he has an outside chance - no more than that. When you look at his tackles, he tackles like a young man. Maybe he's too brave. He was unbalanced in the tackle and ended up injured. He's an outside chance, that's all. Other than that, everybody's fit for QPR. We have a problem picking teams at the moment but that's where we want to me. QPR are fighting for survival and we know it's going to be a hard game. That's what we need - we need to make sure we do our job right."

By Fergie-speak, that probably means Gary Neville or Roy Keane is available to shackle Cristiano Ronaldo. Don't be surprised if the energetic Englishman features at the weekend at Loftus Road or if he makes his first appearance back in a Community Shield fixture in August. Point being, he may or may not be available against Madrid.

United in recent seasons have had a torrid time in regards to the fitness to their squad. This season, though, the club has been relatively fortunate. At the moment, the only other fitness concerns are Darren Fletcher (out for the season due to chronic illness), Wayne Rooney (expected back soon from a sinus problem) and Paul Scholes (out with old man knee). Jones, though, has been enormously important as of late in a tactical sense to United.

United certainly have a deep squad. Jones, though, if out for the Madrid tie, would be an enormous blow. Let's hope Fergie is being coy with the situation.
