Post Match Reaction: Manchester United 0 - 1 Chelsea

A dire game ends in defeat, with United drawing a blank at home for the first time in 66 games in the League

Alex Livesey

Awful game.

A Juan Mata deflected shot was the difference between two poor sides this afternoon at Old Trafford. Manchester United played like a side that had already wrapped up the title. Perhaps that is why I personally am none too worried or bothered. Although it would have been wonderful to help stop Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League.

United fielded a team lacking Micheal Carrick in midfield and perhaps that is why we went with the trio of Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and Anderson, who I felt was the best of the three. Wayne Rooney started on the bench, with RVP up top, flanked by Ryan Giggs on the left and Antonio Valencia on the right. Paul Scholes was an unused sub.

The whole game lacked any kind of quality, and there were next to no clear cut chances. Robin Van Persie had perhaps the best of United's chances. Ryan Giggs finding him with a wonderful pass, but the volley sneaked a foot past the post.

The goal came late on. Wayne Rooney was dispossessed on the edge of the Chelsea penalty area. Chelsea broke, lost the ball but Jonny Evans cleared the ball only to a blue shirt. From there, Chelsea worked the ball well and Juan Mata's shot found the far post via Phil Jones. I personally believe David de Gea would have saved it...

Rafael then went and got himself sent off. He was tussling with David Luiz near the corner flag high up the pitch. Luiz was shielding the ball, using his elbows to the full extent without, and Rafa kicked out. He made minimal contact but the ref saw fit to give him his marching orders. I personally hope that will be the end of the ridiculous narrative that Howard Webb is a United fan. You just know it won't be....

The fact that Chelsea only just deserved the win should show you the lack of quality on offer. Our next game is next Sunday at home to Swansea. Lets hope we take the three points before lifting the trophy
