Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Penarol's young full-back Guillermo Varela for a reported £1m, according to Sky Sports.

The 20-year-old will be David Moyes' first signing as Manchester United manager, although the move is likely one for the future. Penarol club treasurer tweeted yesterday: "In San Pablo airport waiting for the connection to London, with Guille about to board." It now seems that the deal has been all but concluded.

It is believed that the move had been already planned before David Moyes succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford. Coming from Penarol and still a youngster, not too much is known of the player, and it's doubtful how much game-time he'll get consider how well-stocked United are in that position: Rafael is now firmly first-choice, but Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have also played there plenty.

In addition, Varela is not even a fixture in Penarol's first-team, so very little is known about him, but hopefully our scouting network will have seen something worthwhile. He was on trial at Old Trafford during May, so there will have been plenty of opportunity for the club to make an assessment.
