Manchester United have confirmed the signing of 20-year-old full-back Guillermo Varela from Penarol for a fee believed to be around £1m.
United confirmed the Varela signing on their official website, and the youngster becomes the first signing of the David Moyes era - although how much say he had in the deal is open to question. That said, few clubs would call off minor transfers for youngsters due to a change in manager, so we shouldn't immediately assume that Alex Ferguson is going to continue pulling the strings just yet.
The youngster had trials at United in May, when Ferguson was still manager, so this one is definitely on the scouting team and Ferguson. A low fee and the tender age of the player means it probably won't be an issue, and we perhaps shouldn't expect to see him in the starting line-up anytime soon. Nonetheless, whether he likes it or not: Moyes has now popped his transfer cherry at Old Trafford.
