Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a deal in principle to sign Yohan Cabaye from Newcastle, according to Sky Sports News, which will likely end any hope Manchester United have of signing the Frenchman.
Reports had suggested Cabaye was something of a backup target for United, as David Moyes was not convinced he was good enough to be a starter at Old Trafford, but with his main alternative now gone, United appear restricted to Ilkay Gundogan and Arturo Vidal, both of whom would be difficult to obtain in January.
Of course, we've added Mata to a squad that was well in the fight for fourth, so it would be far from a disaster if we weren't to sign anyone else this window. Arturo Vidal may be gettable, but it would be a huge risk to take Gundogan given his injury woes this season. It would even be something of a gamble in the summer, given how long it's dragged on for.
Cabaye would have been a good signing for us owing to his all-round game and versatility, but he's not someone we should be too depressed about missing out on.
