I wasn't going to report on this, because, well, frankly, who cares? But the Daily Mirror have forced my hand somewhat in running the following story, in which some survivors of the 7/7 bombings in London opine on Chris Smalling's fancy-dress antics, where he posed as a suicide bomber at a party.
In short, the victims state that Chris Smalling is a disgrace for being insensitive towards them at a private party but thanks very much for drawing this insensitivity to my attention by putting it in a national newspaper and then phoning me up in my own house and mithering me about a tragic and traumatic experience in my life several years ago.
Now, presumably we can all see that's silly. I don't like to indulge in the low-hanging fruit and general ignorance of journo-bashing, and don't hate the player, hate the game and all that, but this is getting pretty absurd. Presumably we can expect to see equivalence drawn between this and Luis Suarez's racism when he picks up his Player of the season/Time Man of the Year award.
