Paddy McNair makes a surprise return to the starting lineup as Manchester United face Newcastle at Old Trafford.

The youngster starts in a three-man defence as Van Gaal stubbornly persists with his 3-5-2, flanked by Phil Jones and Jonny Evans. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia continue in the wide positions, with Michael Carrick moved into midfield alongside Juan Mata and Wayne Rooney, with Robin van Persie and Falcao up front.

There's still no Ander Herrera in the squad, and oddly no Adnan Januzaj, Angel di Maria or Marouane Fellaini either, but Andreas Pereira does get a spot on the bench. Perhaps some are being saved for the upcoming clash with Spurs. Time will tell.

Manchester United starting lineup (3-5-2): David de Gea; Phil Jones, Paddy McNair, Jonny Evans; Antonio Valencia, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Juan Mata, Ashley Young; Robin van Persie, Falcao.

Subs: Anders Lindegaard, Tyler Blackett, Chris Smalling, Andreas Pereira, Darren Fletcher, James Wilson, Rafael.
