Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United: Player ratings

On the whole, Manchester United put in some good performances against Bayern Munich. Nothing outstanding, a couple of very good displays, and one particularly shocking one.

Shaun Botterill

David de Gea 6

Could have done better on the second and third goals by his standards, and was not particularly authoritative on crosses. We needed a huge performance from the Spaniard tonight, but sadly we didn't get one.

Phil Jones 6

Did well initially but increasingly let Franck Ribery get the better of him as the game wore on. Was not hugely troubled for an out-of-position defender.

Nemanja Vidic 7

Could have done better with letting Thomas Muller get away from him for his goal, but was otherwise very solid all evening.

Chris Smalling 6

Did well in defence as a surprise starter, but was utterly awful in possession, constantly surrendering possession with aimless hoofs to nobody.

Patrice Evra 8

Can't really be blamed for the Muller goal, as he was showing Robben onto his weaker foot. A superb goal, and some pieces of very good defending too.

Michael Carrick 5

A couple of poor giveaways, but was not given the chasing he might have been. Did nothing of any great importance.

Darren Fletcher 8

Superb defensive work helped completely stymie the Bayern attack in the first half and beyond, and it was bizarre to see him taken off.

Shinji Kagawa 6

Poor final ball and decisions let him down, but he was industrious and calm in possession.

Antonio Valencia 8

One of his better games for a while, defending well and being effective and brave while getting forwards too.

Wayne Rooney 1

Just utterly, utterly, utterly awful. Rancid, insipid, woeful stuff. Inject him with something stronger next time. Had he had even an OK game we would have gone through.

Danny Welbeck 7

Ought to have created at least one goal but for Rooney's shocking finish, was typically hardworking and played a large role in why United were able to match Bayern for most of the tie.
