England World Cup squad: Surprise United inclusions and omissions

England's World Cup squad has been announced, with Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck making the cut but Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick only deemed good enough to be on standby.

Roy Hodgson has announced his England squad, and there are a few notable inclusions and omissions from a Manchester United viewpoint.

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones both make the cut, as does Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck, but Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick are dropped, although both are on the standby list.

Rooney's inclusion was a given, and Danny Welbeck was always going to be included too, but there were suggestions that Chris Smalling or Phil Jones could lose their place to the likes of John Stones. As it is, the Everton youngster is only on standby.

Joining him there are Michael Carrick and Tom Cleverley - an appalling season from both men appears to have done for them, with Carrick particularly wretched against Sunderland which might have spelled his ultimate doom. Injuries may yet let them in, but as it is, they're out. Hopefully, they'll improve next season - at Sunderland and Everton.
