Despite reports to the contrary, it appears that United will not name their new manager until after the season has concluded.

Manchester United will not appoint a new manager until the end of the season, according to various reports from various journalists attached to various outlets. The nation's press had generally agreed that Louis van Gaal the mystery manager would be named after United's final home game of the season, last night's 3-1 win over Hull City, but it appears that this is not to be the case.

There is no suggestion — yet — that this is connected to any deal collapsing, or anything else going wrong. So let's speculate wildly. United have not appointed anybody yet because ...

... Louis van Gaal, being a busy man with a big summer ahead, has World Cup related things to do and would like to put the fuss off for a bit. This week, Dutch league players are attending a three-day training camp in Hoenderloo, and next weekend they will be joined by international players.

... of reasons boring and financial.

... reports of an appointment this week, being reports and not, y'know, facts, were inaccurate, and the club and Van Gaal are going through a perfectly normal period of due diligence and negotiation. The kind of thing everybody forgot to do last time.

... they are gearing up for one last doomed crack at Carlo Ancelotti.

... EVERYTHING HAS GONE WRONG AND WE'RE GOING TO END UP WITH DAVID MOYES IN CHARGE AGAIN OH NO WHY IS EVERYTHING ON FIRE THE BURNING THE BURNING.

... Edward Woodward has accidentally been negotiating with the corpse of Louis XIV. The Sun King is thought to be receptive to including Ryan Giggs on his coaching staff but would like to bring in his own Dauphin.
