One left-back out, another in at Manchester United?

According to a report in the Manchester Evening News, Louis van Gaal fancies another left-back with Patrice Evra's departure looking imminent.

It was only a couple of months ago that dear Patrice Evra signed a one-year extension at Old Trafford, though strong rumours are now linking the Frenchman with a move to Serie A champions Juventus. With United's only other first-team left-back Alexander Büttner joining Dynamo Moscow, manager Louis van Gaal will apparently turn his attention to trying to sign his young compatriot Daley Blind.

So claims Stuart Mathieson in the Manchester Evening News, who describes Evra as "keen to move away from Manchester." However, in the same article he claims that Ajax's Blind actually actually plays for Feyenoord, so unless he knows something we don't, you should probably take his report with a pinch of salt. Or two.

Still, when have facts ever got in the way of some transfer salivating? While it would seem bizarre to drop a big sum on another left-back so soon after signing Luke Shaw, Blind's versatility means it wouldn't be as strange as it might seem. Blind has regularly operated in the Philipp Lahm defensive midfield role for Ajax, and van Gaal has also used him there at the World Cup. It definitely isn't his best position, though he can't be any worse than Michael Carrick, right?
