The first trophy of 2015 has been won! Ángel Di María was today named to the FIFA/FIFPro World XI of the Year for 2014. The award is voted for by over 23,383 professional footballers from around the world, and while you might assume that this honour was bestowed following his key role in winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, or his reaching the World Cup final with Argentina, we have it on very good authority that they chose Di Maria on the basis of his goal against Leicester.
Here's the complete team:
Manuel Neuer; Philipp Lahm, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Sergio Ramos; Ángel Di María, Toni Kroos, Andrés Iniesta; Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Arjen Robben.
Yes, that says David Luiz.
Yes, they mean that David Luiz.
Hey, look, that's democracy. You let people vote, you have to put up with the fact that they might vote for the wrong people. Until TBB's largely-benevolent dictatorship takes charge of these things, you'll just have to cope.
