We'd all expected that Manchester United would go off in pursuit of a centre-back and some kind of attacker in the summer transfer window, but as is his wont, Louis van Gaal has told us that we're all wrong. Instead, his top priority is signing a creative midfielder. Quoted in the Mirror, the Dutchman broke with his usual tradition of keeping quiet on transfer matters, and when asked whether a creative midfielder should be top of the agenda he replied:
"Yes, of course."
Unfortunately, that means we're almost certainly never going to see Ander Herrera establish himself in United's first team as long as van Gaal is in charge. In an interesting, if slightly speculative article earlier this month, the Telegraph's Mr. Manchester, Mark Ogden, wrote:
"Herrera's disappearance from view hints at the manager believing the player to be too adventurous and creative to fit into his ‘philosophy.'"
So let's get this straight. Van Gaal wants to sign a creative midfielder in the summer, because our current midfield isn't creative enough with the exception of Herrera, who is too creative. Right.
Anyway, it's not only Herrera whose future at Old Trafford looks bleak, but TBB's rival blogger Juan Mata too. The Spaniard was a regular starter over the first half of the season, though he's not been in a Premier League lineup in over a month. Considering he's been broadly pretty good since joining from Chelsea last January, it's slightly bizarre that he's fallen out of favour. Anyway, this is certainly a space to be watched.
