On This Day, 2008: Manchester United win the Champions League

On 21 May 2008, Manchester United won the Champions League in a penalty shootout with Chelsea. Relive John Terry's excellent slip and failure.

Wes Brown curls in a cross for Cristiano Ronaldo, who obviously scores his header. Then Frank Lampard stumbles towards goal for his inevitable equaliser. The teams go at each other in extra time, and Didier Drogba, then a much worse human being on the football pitch than he later became, was sent off. United were unable to exploit the advantage, and the game went to a penalty shootout.

Ronaldo is the only player to miss his penalty, self-consciously stuttering his run-up but only confusing himself with it, not Petr Cech, who saves.

John Terry walks towards the penalty spot. Cristiano Ronaldo is the only player so far to have missed. Terry ostentatiously adjusts his captain's armband so we can all see it. He is the best man, he is thinking. He is the best man and he will be the best man with the winning goal. Relive what a lovely moment follows.
