Manchester United reportedly renew interest in Aston Villa's Ron Vlaar

According to the Mail, Manchester United could make a move for Ron Vlaar.

Vlaar played for Louis van Gaal in every match at the World Cup in his now semi-legendary three-man central defence, and was regarded as one of the - if not the - best defender in the tournament.

United were regularly linked with Vlaar during both transfer windows in the 2014/15 season, due to his relationship with Van Gaal and also his relative affordability given his expiring contract. He is now a free agent, and therefore would be an easy signing to make for United as they try to add bodies and depth before United go on their pre-season tour, and prepare for the Champions League qualifying round.

Vlaar endured a miserable season at Aston Villa upon his return to England after the World Cup, struggling with injuries and poor form, but has otherwise been a relatively consistent performer during his Villa career. Assuming Vlaar is not the only senior central defender signed this window, it wouldn't be an absolutely wretched idea. If he did join, it would be assumed that Jonny Evans would soon be booted out of the club after years of mediocrity.
