Southampton rejected an opening bid of £20 million from United in the past two weeks, with the club not needing to sell from a financial point of view.
Nevertheless, Southampton have accepted that the French midfielder will be leaving this summer, and are happy to wait to get the best price for their midfielder, after keeping him on for another season when Spurs were interested.
Manchester United and Arsenal were then rumoured to be after the player, but Arsenal have been put off by the price and decided that Francis Coquelin might be sufficient for the season in defensive midfield (or may be after another, more established player like Arturo Vidal).
Louis van Gaal wants to get the player signed before the start of the pre-season US tour, with the players flying out on 13 July. He will hope that at least one other new signing, possibly more, will be able to join the team at that time, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and Seamus Coleman looking the most likely, as the Sergio Ramos transfer drags on.
