Having agreed the sale of their striker Javier Hernandez to Bayer Leverkusen for 12 million euros, Manchester United have apparently moved swiftly to fill the gap in their squad.

United have reportedly opened talks with Monaco for their young French striker Anthony Martial, who has recently received his first call up to the senior French squad.

Martial moved when he was a teenager to Monaco from Lyon for five million euros as Lyon attempted to balance the books, and now Monaco are involved in a similar exercise. Their owner cut their recent largesse in favour of promoting younger players, and the failure to qualify for the Champions League stages has meant they need to raise funds.

As a result, it appears Martial is available, and having failed to land a more established target, United have made their move for Martial.

Young, with an acceptable goalscoring record and quick, he would not be able to replace the execrable Wayne Rooney straight away, but would provide a more compelling alternative than Hernandez and Marouane Fellani.
