Manchester United visit Southampton on Sunday with an eye on taking advantage of Manchester City's defeat against West Ham.
United could move into second place, above West Ham United and Leicester City currently on 12 points, and United on 10. That would leave them two points below City, on 15.
The biggest obstacle to victory for Manchester United is making sure that the absence of Luke Shaw is dealt with adequately. The most similar replacement for a quick left-back able to contribute in defence is Ashley Young, but that might compromise the solidity of the back for. Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian are the other options for the position.
Ronald Koeman's Southampton have not played quite as well as they did under him in his first season in the Premier League, and have only managed a single victory so far this season.
