Friday’s Guardian rumour mill led with the story that José Mourinho is keen on trying to lure Mesut Özil from Arsenal. The 28-year-old playmaker is reportedly hesitating on signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, with his current deal set to expire at the end of next season, and with Henrikh Mkhitaryan having so far failed to impress the United boss, it could well be that he’s in the hunt for another attacking midfielder.

It would not be the first time that Özil has played under Mourinho, with the two having been together at Real Madrid. Since his move to Arsenal in 2013, the former Schalke and Werder Bremen man has established himself as one of the Premier League’s very best creative talents, and spent last season racking up assists for fun. He would certainly make a great capture for United.

But, that said, it still seems pretty unlikely to happen. There’s still plenty of time for Arsenal to get a deal done, and with United continuing to struggle in the league, it could well be that — for now, at least — remaining at the Emirates is the most attractive option for Özil.
