Wayne Rooney and Henrikh Mkhitaryan return for Manchester United

Anthony Martial is also recalled for United's League Cup game against West Ham.

Following Sunday's disappointing 1-1 draw against West Ham, Wayne Rooney, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial have been restored to Manchester United's starting lineup to play the same opposition. We expect Rooney to take up a central position with Mkhitaryan and Martial to the right and left respectively. Zlatan Ibrahimovic continues up front.

Behind them, Michael Carrick will do his passing thing and Ander Herrera will do his running around thing. Paul Pogba is suspended for this one. As is Jose Mourinho, who will presumably watch from the stands.

In defence, Luke Shaw returns at left back and Antonio Valencia continues at right back. Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones continue in the centre of defence: we don't know what Daley Blind's done to offend Jose Mourinho, but it must have been nasty. David de Gea is in goal.

Joining Blind on the bench are Sergio Romero, Morgan Schneiderlin, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and somebody called Bastian Schweinsteiger, who we can only assume is connected to one of United's sponsors. No place for Memphis Depay. January's a-coming.
