Once more unto the bleak, dear friends, once more. Manchester United travel to Shrewsbury Town this evening in what is technically the fifth round of the FA Cup, but is actually Louis van Gaal's absolute last chance to hang on the job he's been so meticulously messing up. This is his OK Corral. His Waterloo. His Final Countdown. Do-de-doo-doo. Do-de-doo-doo-doo.
Quite how we got to the point where a win over League One opposition made any difference to the appropriateness of a man to manage Manchester United is one for the historians. But with a quite remarkable injury list, it seems that fate is determined to make life as difficult as possible for Van Gaal this evening. Expect Sergio Romero. Expect some children. Expect ... well, you know what to expect by now.
Shrewsbury, incidentally, are in League One's relegation zone, and have achieved a win (Blackpool), a loss (Southend United) and a draw (Fleetwood Town) in their three games since knocking Sheffield Wednesday out of the FA Cup.
