Manchester United defender set for Bundesliga loan move

Manchester United right-back Guillermo Varela is set to move on loan to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, according to a number of reports. The 23-year-old Uruguayan — who made his first-team breakthrough under Louis van Gaal last season — has been deemed surplus to requirements by José Mourinho at Old Trafford, and was omitted from the United squad that travelled to China ahead of the upcoming pre-season tour.

Varela is certainly unfortunate to have been forced out of the club, having looked pretty solid in the few appearances he made last season. However, he’s understandably beneath at least Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the pecking order, and with Mourinho known to prefer working with a smaller squad, it’s no real surprise that he’s been forced to look elsewhere.

Who knows, an impressive season in Germany and he could well stake a claim to be a United first-teamer again in the future. But until that time comes, it’s auf wiedersehn, Guillermo; we hardly knew ye.
