A new day, a new transfer rumour! Today’s is especially from out of left field, with Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that Napoli are willing to spend a hefty chunk of their Gonzalo Higuaín cash on Manchester United right-back Matteo Darmian.
The Neapolitan outfit have been looking for a rotation option on the right of their defence for a while, and lost out on the signing of Sassuolo’s Šime Vrsaljko to Atlético Madrid earlier this summer. Darmian would certainly fit the bill for Maurizio Sarri’s outfit.
However, it remains to be seen whether United will actually be happy to let Darmian go, especially with Guillermo Varela having departed on loan to Eintracht Frankfurt. That has left United a little short on options at right-back, with Timothy Fosu-Mensah the only backup option to Darmian at present. If he was to depart, United would presumably have to move to replace him.
Unless Napoli are willing to spend a surprisingly big sum, that could prove more effort than it’s worth.
