Former Manchester United manager David Moyes has reportedly returned to Old Trafford to sign two of his former charges, with defenders Paddy McNair and Donald Love set to follow the Scot to his new club, Sunderland. According to Sky Sports, “Sunderland are understood to be paying an initial £5m fee for McNair, which could rise to £7m, on a four-year contract while Love will cost the Black Cats £1m.”

Truth be told, that’s probably some good business from United. Though there's always some romance in the idea of young players coming through the ranks and establishing themselves as first teamers, neither McNair nor Love — now both 21 years old — have shown anything in their limited minutes in the first team to suggest they’ll be good enough to cut it at the very top level.

Still, this does seem like the perfect deal in which United could insert a buyback clause in the unlikely event McNair and Love turn into Cafu and Roberto Carlos respectively.
