It’s football. It’s Friday night. It’s Friday Night Football! Manchester United play their first home game of the season when Southampton visit Old Trafford to start the weekend’s action, and Paul Pogba’s José Mourinho’s side will surely be braced for a very tough contest.
Though United impressed in their season-opening win over Bournemouth last weekend, Southampton have the quality to give them a real game. They started their league campaign with a draw against Watford, though they can expect to improve over the coming weeks as they become accustomed to the unfamiliar midfield diamond preferred by new coach Claude Puel.
Jesse Lingard and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson remain doubtful for United, while Bastian Schweinsteiger is once again unlikely to appear. Euro 2016 winner José Fonte could return to the heart of the Southampton defence after an extended summer holiday, despite recent reports linking him with a move to United.
