The League Cup -- recently rebranded as the EFL Cup -- third round draw took place yesterday, and Manchester United will travel to take on Northampton Town.

The two sides last met in the FA Cup fifth round in 2004, with a young United side which included Cristiano Ronaldo cruising to a 0-3 victory at Sixfields Stadium. The Red Devils would of course go on to lift the famous trophy later that year.

Perhaps the most memorable meeting between the two clubs took place in 1970, again in the FA Cup, with United runing out 8-2 winners. Old Trafford legend George Best netted an impressive six goals on that occassion (video below).

United boss José Mourinho has won the League Cup three times over his two spells in charge of Chelsea, and has always placed an emphasis on trying to win the competition as, with the final usually taking place in February, it represents the earliest oportunity to secure a major trophy each season.

The EFL Cup third round tie will take place on Tuesday 20 September.
