Wayne Rooney will be dropped for Manchester United’s encounter with Leicester City on Saturday afternoon, according to The Sun’s Neil Ashton.

In his report, Ashton claims that United boss José Mourinho is set to axe the skipper after his dreadful performance in the club’s 3-1 defeat to Leicester City at Vicarage Road last Sunday.

It was the Red Devils’ third defeat in a row, following losses to Manchester City and Feyenoord in the Premier League and Europa League respectively.

No United player covered themself in glory against Watford, but Rooney was particularly poor, playing in midfield and looking way off the pace, while continuously misplacing passes and gifting possession to the Hornets.

The trip to Vicarage Road marked a change in formation for United, with Mourinho lining his men up in a 4-3-3 shape for the first time in the league this season.

And the Portuguese coach also made an about face on Rooney’s position on the field, playing the 30-year-old alongside Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini in the midfield three, despite explicitly stating that the England captain would not be utilised as a midfielder under his watch.

United’s issues appear to stretch far beyond the matter of whether or not Rooney should be considered an undisputed member of the starting XI, but his presence in the side does seem to hinder Mourinho’s men from performing to their maximum.

Many fans have been calling for Rooney to be dropped from the side for some time, feeling that better players are being forced to sit on the bench, while the number 10’s place in the team is preventing the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Pogba and Henrik Mkhitaryan from playing in their preferred roles.

A fan pole on the Red Issue forum showed that a staggering 99 per cent of United supporters feel it’s time for Rooney to be dropped, and it would apear that they might be about to get their wish.

Have your say below; should Rooney still be considered part of United’s best XI?
