It’s amusing to think that this time last season, Marcus Rashford was but a twinkle in the Manchester United first team’s eye. He may still only be 18 years old, but the local lad already seems well on his way to establishing himself as one of world football’s most exciting talents. As if we needed reminding, Rashford demonstrated quite why he’s held in such high regard again last night, netting a hat-trick for the England U-21 team in a 6-1 thrashing of Norway.
It was Rashford’s first ever appearance for the U-21 side, and if Sam Allardyce was watching, it could well be one of his last. It demonstrated all of the attributes with which Rashford has become synonymous since making his goalscoring debut for Louis van Gaal’s United in last season’s Europa League encounter with Midtjylland, including (but probably not limited to) bravery, accuracy, instinct and blistering pace. Long may it continue.
