The Mesut Özil to Manchester United transfer rumors have reared their ugly heads yet again, this time with a vengeance. According to shameless Gooner John Cross in The Mirror, the Arsenal playmaker has already informed his teammates that he’s bound for Old Trafford. Özil is in the last year of his Arsenal contract, with little apparent desire to renew, and should therefore be available on a free transfer in the summer. Recent comments from Arsene Wenger, however, have indicated a potential willingness on the club’s part to sell in January, rather than lose the German for nothing months later.
Could a January reunion with José Mourinho be on the cards? Both men have expressed a mutual respect for each other from their time together at Real Madrid, so this rumor may not be as far-fetched as it once seemed.
On the hand, Özil is an extremely gifted player who has shown that he can be both entertaining and productive. He is already acclimated to the Premier League, and would be used to Mourinho’s demands and methods. He would be available for a cut price, and taking another of Arsenal’s best players would be very, very funny.
On the other hand, his time in England has been underwhelming, and he only seems to show up for Arsenal when he can be bothered. Depending on your perspective, he’s either been tainted by the culture of losing at the current day Arsenal, or his time there has just exposed him as having always been a luxury player.
