Finally, we can all collectively exhale. United fans have been waiting with bated breath to find out whether or Red Devils skipper and club mascot Wayne Rooney would be leaving Old Trafford for the obscene riches of the Chinese Super League. Now - straight from the horse’s mouth - we have confirmation that he will not be leaving United this month.
“Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Man United. I hope I’ll play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts. It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.”
Phew! Rooney’s pace and dynamism has been sorely missed while he’s been out of the team with some conveniently vague muscle bother, so it’s good to know that he’ll be available for the rest of the campaign. Rooney was reported to be bemused by Jose Mourinho’s failure to confirm that the player was going nowhere, but the manager has already extended an olive branch by letting it be known that he expects him to be involved in the League Cup final.
While this announcement puts to bed the speculation that Rooney will be leaving the club within the next few days, it also confirms the reported interest from China (as transfer windows in Europe have long been closed). Furthermore, the statement notably makes no effort to pretend that Rooney has a future at United beyond the end of this season. Despite his transfer requests, and his sometimes woeful conditioning, it’s been one hell of a career. Ta ra, Wayne.
