Manchester United will close out their tour of the United States tonight by facing off against Barcelona at FedEx Field in Landover, MD on Wednesday night. This marks the third time in seven summers that these two clubs have faced off during pre-season in the United States. The outrageous ticket prices and perhaps the fading novelty of these once-rare match-ups have already resulted in some disappointing crowd sizes this summer. That, combined with the notorious Washington, D.C. summer heat may mean another less than full house tonight.
Those that do turn out though, should be in a store for a slightly more competitive match than some of the previous ones on show. For United, this is the one of the last friendlies before their season begins in earnest with the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid in about 10 days, and the last against top opposition. Several players are likely to get more than just a 45-minute run out, and some of those that are battling for places in the squad next season will be thinking as much about impressing the manager as they are about building up their fitness.
