Despite the fact that José Mourinho has next to no track record of breaking the bank for unproven youngsters, there have been several reports in recent weeks linking Manchester United with a move for Bayern Munich’s teenage midfielder Renato Sanches. The 19-year-old was reportedly subject to interest not only from United, but also Chelsea and AC Milan.
However, the Bavarians’ boss Carlo Ancelotti has today put the rumours to bed, confirming that the versatile Portuguese midfielder will be staying at the Allianz Arena for the upcoming season. “Renato Sanches will stay with us until the end of the transfer window,” the Italian rather bluntly declared in a press conference quoted by Squawka.
In truth, this one always seemed a non-starter; there aren’t likely to be many United fans surprised by the news. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Sanches is set for a lot of game time at Bayern this season. Signed by the Bavarians on the back of a string of outstanding performances in Portugal’s successful European Championships in France last year, Sanches ended up making just six league starts in his debut Bundesliga campaign.
He’s got great promise, but it remains to be seen whether he was right in making the jump to an elite club so early.
