Following a dominant season debut for Manchester United they continued where they left off versus West Ham this week against Swansea City. United started off a tad slower against the Swans, but stayed consistent throughout the match resulting in United pulling away from the opposition. Another 4-0 victory in favor of the Red Devils. These are the player ratings from the match, out of 10.
Paul Pogba : 9.0 (Man of the Match)
Pogba had a few questionable fouls in the first half, and after receiving a harsh yellow, some might have been wondering if the Frenchman’s day would end early. Luckily, Pogba did not receive another card for the infringement, and turned in another brilliant performance on the pitch. He ended his day with 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 shots, an 83% pass completion rate, and had a powerful header from a free kick that hit the crossbar which led to a tap in goal for Eric Bailly. On any given week, Pogba is controlling the midfield and generating chances for both himself and others.
Henrik Mkhitaryan: 8.5
Mkhitaryan had another great showing in today’s match. He is a center point in a lot of United’s attacks and consistently sends in accurate free kick crosses. Mkhitaryan shows pace on the pitch, moving up the field in stride with or without the ball. Mkhitaryan had two assists today that each had a level of class to them that seemed to make the goals afterwards look easy to finish.
Anthony Martial: 8.5 (Player to Watch)
Martial came into the game as a substitute for the second week in a row. Picking up where he left off in the first game, Martial wasted no time introducing himself. The French attacker was a key part of creating United’s second goal, he then got into the act himself by scoring United’s third goal. It would be great to see Martial get more playing time on the pitch as the season progresses.
Phil Jones: 8.0
Jones put in a solid showing against the Swans. Reliable on both ends of the pitch, Jones even nearly scored a goal from a free kick in the first half! He then turned in 10 clearances and an 89% pass completion rate. Tight marking was kept on corners and free kicks alike.
Eric Bailly: 8.0
Bailly compliments Jones as the other center back for Manchester United. Bailly claimed the reward after a Pogba header hit the crossbar, tapping in the ball for the first goal of the day, and the first of his United career. Bailly marked well defensively and behaved himself in the process, by not receiving any cards in the match.
Nemanja Matić: 7.5
Matić played well again today in the middle of the pitch. In his second game for United he showed again his veteran presence out there. Completing 90% of his passes today, Matić also contributed by having 6 clearances, and had one interception. At 29 years of age, he isn’t the fastest player out there anymore but he more than makes up for his speed with his knowledge and poise on the field. Matić further showed what an excellent pick up he was this summer.
Antonio Valencia: 7.0
The right back played well again today. Turning in another full ninety minutes, Valencia brought speed on the edge of the field both on the defensive and offensive sides. He still has some quality pace in his legs and can get forward with the attack. Winning 5 of 8 duels today, an 89% pass completion rate, and recording 3 accurate long balls all in a day’s work.
Romelu Lukaku: 7.0
After a dream debut for Lukaku in the season opener it was hard to imagine him surpassing that performance in this week’s match. Lukaku played well and made good things happen when opportunities presented themselves today. His goal was nothing flashy, but a nice finish.
Juan Mata: 6.5
A rather quiet game from the Spaniard today. Mata is a solid player and seems to always be making plays in the midfield. Whether they are passes forward or backwards on the pitch, he can always be trusted to make the right decision.
David de Gea: 6.5
De Gea was tested very early in today’s match. The swans came out and almost scored a goal from a genius kick that left de Gea frozen. Luckily for United, the shot hit the crossbar and went towards the corner. Otherwise de Gea was not truly threatened in the match too often.
Daley Blind: 6.0
Coming into this season I was hoping to see an improvement from Blind on the pitch. Two games in and Blind has been playing a lot better from last year. He seems to be making better decisions, good passes, and strikes the ball well off free kicks. However, I’m not completely sold on the lad yet. A good performance today against Swansea but we will see how he performs against better teams.
Marcus Rashford: 5.0
Rashford had a performance today that one can expect from a young player. It just seemed that he could never really get anything going in today’s match. The pace was there, but just seemed he was always one step late to truly beating the defenders. He had a few shots and opportunities that seemed promising but never came to fruition.
